Architecture

The SHPO may require an evaluation of buildings, structures, landscapes or objects to determine if they are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). Under the National Historic Preservation Act, cultural resources 50 years or older could be significant to local, state, or national history and are eligible for the National Register. There are more recently constructed cultural resources that contain unique elements or historic association that also may be eligible.

An architectural survey requires an archival review of the property’s history, including its past use, architect and builder, and involves photographing the cultural resource to be evaluated. If the property is determined eligible for the National Register, the SHPO will provide guidelines to mitigate the impact a project could have on the important cultural resource.

An architectural documentation includes at least:

  • a complete history of the property’s construction, use and alterations
  • description of the setting
  • pertinent information on the architect and builder
  • detailed photographs and drawings of the interior, exterior and setting of the building, structure, landscape or object
